Encope micropora L. Agassiz 1841 |
|
Family: Mellitidae |

Dimensions: 115 x 115 x 15 mm |
Although I got this specimen as Encope californica, I have some doubt. Following the remarks
of Heinke Schultz in her book „Sea
urchins“, page 349, the highest point of Encope californica should
be just anterior to
the anal lunule. The anal lunule should extent a short distance between the distal ends
of the posterior pair of petals.
For
Encope borealis A. H. Clark 1946 the anal lunule should be beyond
the distal ends of the posterior
petals and the
highest point should be in the center
of the flattened plateau.
Although this specimen
came to me as E. californica it seems to be rather
E. micropora L. Agassiz 1841.
